Dan Quayle on Gun Control

Vice President of the U.S., 1989-1993; Former Republican Senator (IN)

One-Strike for gun crimes, including juveniles

“We should send an unmistakable message: If you use a gun in the commission of a crime, our standard should be ‘one strike and you’re out.’ If a student brings a gun to school, our standard should be ‘one strike and you’re expelled.’”

2nd Amendment rights protect all other rights

I am a strong supporter of the Second Amendment because this right protects all others. As president, I will fight for each American’s right to keep and bear arms and I will swiftly veto any attempt to infringe upon this right as being unconstitutional.

Self-control instead of gun control

Recently there have been several tragic incidents across our nation. The solution to these will not be found in gun control, but rather in self-control. It is the absence of faith, hope, direction and parental discipline in the lives of more and more young people that cause some of them to act violently. A child who loves God, honors his parents and respects his neighbors will not kill anyone.

Enforce existing gun laws before making new ones

Quayle opposes greater restrictions on the sale and use of guns, saying existing laws must first be more aggressively enforced.

Instant gun checks OK, but real issue is self-control

The quick fix artists are now in a frenzy over guns [due to the Littleton killings]. Certainly there are things we can do concerning guns. The instant check system works. And we need to enforce the laws on the books that deal with gun violence. But the overriding issue isn’t really gun control, it’s self-control. A child who loves God, honors his parents, and respects his neighbors will not kill anyone. In our hearts we know that the answer to tragedies like Littleton is in changing the culture.
