Deb Haaland on Immigration

Separating children from parents at the border is appalling

Q: One of the more divisive issues is immigration. Will you work with President Trump on border security?

REPRESENTATIVE-ELECT DEB HAALAND (D-NM-1): We actually feel confident about the security of our borders. New Mexico as a whole was appalled when the policy to separate children from their parents happened on the border. It made me immediately think about governmental policies back when my grandmother was a child and she was separated from her family and taken to Indian boarding school. So it seems like at some point, we need to look at our history and stop doing the things that are harmful to our children and work toward finding solutions that are absolutely humane.

Q: You would work with President Trump?

HAALAND: I think we all have to do it together. The Democrats won back the House. We didn't win back the Senate or the presidency yet. So we do have to work across the aisle to make sure that we can get things passed. Yes.

Immigration reform: stop deportation, protect DREAMers

This country was built by immigrants. As a Native American woman, my family has experienced the violence of government-enforced family separation. I will always fight to keep families together. ICE is an out of control institution that is terrorizing American families. I want to stop deportations, protect DREAMers, and I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented immigrants in America.

I oppose deportations and bans that rip families apart

Q: What immigration policies do you support?

A: My Native American family has experienced the brutality of government-backed family separation. I believe in keeping families together, and therefore I oppose deportations and bans that rip families apart. I will fight for comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented Americans, all of whom exemplify our American dream.

Homeland Security head should resign over family detention

The Trump Administration's white supremacist agenda is out of control--and I stand against detention camps for families, the imprisonment of children, and the criminalization of asylum seekers. I'm calling for the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen. She has been a failure in her leadership over this crisis. It is also time to defund ICE--an agency that is out of bounds in its efforts to terrorize families.
