State of New Jersey secondary Archives: on Families & Children

Phil Murphy: Make New Jersey safest place to deliver and raise babies

We haven't lost sight of the maternal and infant health crisis that threatened the lives of our mothers and babies -- especially mothers and babies of color--long before the COVID-19 pandemic. No mother should ever endure the pain of losing her baby and no child should ever feel the deep loss of growing up without a mother. We are determined to make New Jersey the safest place in the nation to deliver and raise a baby.

Phil Murphy: Committed to more robust child-care support system

We cannot afford to miss out on the contributions of half our population. Harnessing the full economic power of all of our people requires providing real affordable options for child care that work for all families. We remain committed to easing the burden of working parents, especially moms, and creating an even more robust child-care support system.

Phil Murphy: We all can contribute, including the differently abled

We must immediately resist Washington's all-out assault on New Jersey. This is not as much a battle between Democrats and Republicans, but a battle between right and wrong--between standing up for the people of New Jersey or standing for failed Washington politics.

We will resist every move from President Trump and a misguided Congressional leadership that would worsen income inequality; or divide families or deny access to college for our Dreamers; or defund essential infrastructure; or gut health care for our children, seniors, and the working poor.

A stronger and fairer New Jersey is rooted in an economy that creates better jobs and provides higher wages ... that creates places where industries can grow and communities can rise, where innovative companies are born and where millennials want to live and where seniors want to retire ... and, which remembers that we all have value and we all can contribute, including, and especially, the differently abled.

Seth Kaper-Dale: Address problems specific to LGBTQ community

New Jersey must be more inclusive for everyone in the LGBTQ community. Most insurance companies in New Jersey do not cover mental health therapy, sex reassignment surgeries and hormone prescriptions. This is unacceptable. LGBTQ teen and adult homelessness is at an all time high in our region, as well. Seth will address this on two fronts: trying to keep kids from being kicked out by their families and creating safe spaces for these children to live and grow up.

Seth Kaper-Dale: Earned paid sick leave is a must

Work is important, but the work of caring for oneself and one's family while in crisis is more important still. I would suggest that if the state really cares about this it not put the full onus of responsibility on small business. There should be in place state matching funds to meet the costs of earned paid sick leave after a % threshold is reached annually by the employer.

Phil Murphy: Ensure that all workers have the right to earned sick leave

One million New Jersey workers do not receive earned sick leave. Too often as a result, these individuals must choose between their health and their job. Opponents of earned sick leave claim it will hurt workplace morale and lower performance, a claim unsupported by experience. In fact, earned sick leave creates a more healthy and productive workplace. Phil Murphy will work to ensure that all workers have the right to earned sick leave.

Steve Fulop: Require companies to grant paid sick leave

Unemployment has dropped from 8.8% when Mr Fulop was elected to 5%. While Mr Fulop, a Democrat, has streamlined regulations and expedited business approvals, he is protective of the city's industrial past. "Grittiness makes the city special. We don't want to become a Main Street with chain stores." He has also pushed a progressive agenda. Under his watch, the city became the first in the state (and sixth in the country) to require companies to grant paid sick leave. It is the first New Jersey city to have a transgender health care programme. More affordable housing has been built, even along the desirable waterfront, in the past two and a half years than in the previous ten.
